Description of Scented Agarwood (Oud, Aloe, Ud, عود) Tasbih

Nafi' reported that when Ibn Umar wanted fumigation he got it from aloeswood without mixing anything with it, or he put camphor along with aloeswood and then said: This is how Allah's Messenger ﷺ fumigated.

(Sahih Muslim, 27: 5601)

Agarwood, often named Oud in the Middle East, plays an important symbolic and ritualistic role in the three Abrahamic religions. In the Holy Bible, Balaam, who Imam Abu Ja’far al-Tabari describes as a possessor of the knowledge of the Most Sacred Name of God, mentions aloes from Divine inspiration. He says: “As the valleys are they spread forth, as gardens by the river's side, as the trees of aloes which the Lord hath planted, and as cedar trees beside the waters.” In the west, agarwood is gaining much interest and popularity in more recent times.

Within Islam, the scent of oud is often used to stimulate the psyche into a state of concentration during prayer and dhikr. This is one reason why the hadith of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ mentions its fumigation and why Sayidna Umar ibn al Khattab (RAA), the second caliph, made burning incense in the mosques a common practice.

For tasbih craftsmen, the beautiful scent, the natural wood grain & resin texture, along with its earthy color, have long made agarwood an ideal material for prayer beads.

In partnership with a masbaha guild based in Islamic Cairo, Rumi’s Garden is humbled to bring to you this wonderful oud bead set. The tasseling was commissioned to West African Azhari students who learnt their craft from their forefathers. Since the tasbih is handmade, small inconsistencies make each piece completely unique.
